At Gym Royale, we follow the principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with a focus on self-defense. This means we not only work on the athletic aspects of BJJ, but also learn how to defend yourself effectively. Our training is based on the methods of Grandmaster Rickson Gracie, one of the most respected BJJ experts in the world.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world. It was brought to Brazil by Japanese fighters at the beginning of the last century, where it was further developed by Brazilian fighters and gained an identity all its own. The sport focuses primarily on ground combat, in which the opponent is brought to the ground by a take-down, throw or shoot. Once on the ground, the fight continues with the goal of gaining a dominant position and forcing the opponent to give up.

Do you want to improve your standing techniques? Then you can improve your striking with kickboxing training in addition to BJJ. This way you develop a complete fighting style that is effective both on the ground and standing.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training: the exercises

During our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training we work on the following core techniques:

  • Take-downs: Get your opponent to the ground with an effective throw or shoot.
  • Position Control: Learn how to acquire and hold a dominant position.
  • Submissions: Practice techniques such as armbars, chokes and joint locks to force the opponent to surrender.
  • Sparring: Test your skills in realistic, controlled battles with fellow students.
  • Wrestling Techniques: Improve your wrestling skills, essential for both BJJ and MMA.
  • Cardio and strength training.: Work on your fitness and strength to improve your performance on the mat

Specific to BJJ, you can develop extra strength and explosiveness through strength & conditioning for BJJ. This makes you physically stronger and better prepared for intense competitions.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Lessons: Gi and No Gi training

Classes within Gym Royale are taught in Gi (traditional kimono) or No Gi (shorts and t-shirt). Training in No Gi has many similarities to wrestling and MMA in that the techniques are less dependent on the Gi and the emphasis is on speed and strength. Want to purchase a Gi? These are available at the counter for €85.

Want real personal attention and faster growth? Then choose BJJ personal training, where you refine your technique and strategy one-on-one with a trainer.
